flash news: Toxic paint thinner allegedly found in Elysium Health’s “self made” Basis

Wow new legal action against Elysium Health reports that the nicotinamide riboside in Elysium Health’s Basis contains, quote:

“Elysium’s new Basis product is contaminated with toluene (CAS No. 108-88-3), an industrial solvent used in such things as paint thinners, fingernail polish, lacquers, and adhesives”

moreover, quote:

The residual solvents analysis indicated the presence of four solvents in the August samples that are not found in the July samples. The solvents detected in the August samples include ethanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane (DCM), and toluene. While ethanol, ethyl acetate and DCM were present in trace concentrations, toluene was present at 96-144 mg/kg, which renders Elysium’s product adulterated…Lead, molybdenum, and zinc were not detected in the July samples but were detected in the August samples”

It is believed that Elysium Health’s basis in July still contained the Chromadex produced nicotinamise riboside version called Niagen and from then onwards switched to a self made (or imported) nicotinamide riboside ingredient due to its conflict with Chromadex that started when it stop paying its bills.

Its hard to believe that Leonard Guarente the chief science officer of Elysium Health would risk the health of his customers with a supplement that he recommends people to take daily and for the rest of their lives because of a self created business dispute – but here we are. It will be interesting to see what follows, FDA action, consumer class action?

Is there a necessity to purchase the NR type product? I will state that biochemistry is not my field of expertise or training. However when I read the papers and discussions of how the product is utilized, it seems that the first biological action is the separation of the NMN molecule from the Ribose molecule. Why not just take these two separately?

Hello, there is a long debate on what happens to the NR after you ingest it. Does it get broken down in the liver before it goes into circulation? Reaches the cells as NR? Other paths? Probably a bit of all. You can read in detail in this study of Trammell & Brenner where they use so called double labelled NR to track NR and its breakdown products. There is also research that shows NMN cannot pass into the cell but NR can after which NMN is formed inside the cell. In this study the researchers demonstrate that when you use NMN to raise NAD+ there is the same dependence on NRK1 for the NAD+ synthesis as is the case with NR. That’s strong evidence. Moreover by using labeled compounds the researchers conclude:
“Using stable isotope-labelled compounds, we confirm NMN is metabolized extracellularly to NR that is then taken up by the cell and converted into NAD+. Our results indicate that mammalian cells require conversion of extracellular NMN to NR for cellular uptake and NAD+ synthesis, explaining the overlapping metabolic effects observed with the two compounds”

So ingesting NMN seems not to be a more direct way to raise NAD+ inside the cells. Whether taking them both leads to more NAD+ boosting I would not know. But with the price of NMN of the charts and without any safety approvals as has been obtained been obtained for Niagen I dont see a reason for doing it as NR works great for me. As the article about Elysium Health’s tainted product basis shows making safe compounds is not that easy.
