3 + years use of Niagen (nicotinamide riboside) and plant supplements

Its been a while since I updated the blog. Its because life has been busy and there are so many things I want to do and achieve. That renewed ambition and energy I see as one of the side effects of my journey in “slowing aging” or as I now believe “anti-aging”. I became 48 years old a couple months ago and when I look in the mirror I see a man in his 30s (okay perhaps I am too positive so lets make it late 30s) who has over the last 3+ years seen the signs of aging in his face, hair, body gradually retreat. Over 3 years is a long time, its a trend and I see no signs that this trend would start to revert towards aging again. And like I wrote in the beginning it has started to influence my mind, I feel I have gained a decade of staying youthful and why could I not gain another one?

In March 2015, at the age of 45 years old I started experimenting with Niagen (Nicotinamide Riboside) and plant based supplements. I had followed the anti-aging quest for some time and was increasingly intrigued by the studies into NAD+ boosting. Nicotinamide Riboside was commercially available as Niagen with positive anecdotal reports of very early adopters. At the same time my parents became 75 years old and they were running out of time so the luxury of waiting a bit longer for more science reports was over. For myself I didn’t like the trend I saw when I watched in the mirror and my slowly worsening physical, eyes sight and a general sense of more tiredness. So I ordered the first bottles of Niagen for my parents and myself and never looked back as they say. Together with the Niagen I started to experiment with plant based supplements such as Honokiol, Fisetin, Pterostilbene, Quercetin, Luteolin.

When I started in April 2015 I wrote down the following items that I would use to track improvements, I updated the situation today:

– hairline

hair line has regrown at a slow pace (see a post about that here). It continuous to regrow at the same slow space to this day. In general hair has also become fuller. Still only a couple gray hairs. I will make a separate post about this in near future with updated pictures. I am pleased with the status.

– wrinkles, skin

The skin has less age spots and regained it “fullness”. Wrinkles are less deep but have not disappeared. Overall I am very satisfied with the healthier appearance.

– vision

3 years go I was ready to go and get glasses. I am still without glasses and I am no longer thinking “its time” to get them. They are not perfect but they work well. In particular in the area of glare and focus they perform better.

– concentration

Mental capacity is very good, I cannot exactly compare with the past as I am used to the current baseline but I wrote it down as a problem area 3 years ago and today its not a problem at all.

– handpain

My hands are good, no pain, they feel warm and strong. I reported this already earlier but I used to have a finger that would go numb when it was cold in winter, that disappeared and I have not felt that numbness for example the entire last winter

– gym performance

Used to just feeling fit again. I am not pushing it very hard in the gym but go regularly, in my experiments and perception it has a synergistic effect with Niagen. The best way to perhaps describe my fitness status is like this: In the past after serious exercise or physical work I would sit down and then there is this stiffness, you let go a sigh. Nowadays I still have that expectation of feeling this “tiredness” when I let myself drop in a chair after physical activity and I recall several times being surprised I don’t feel any stiffness or any level of pain or tiredness. Looks wise, compared to men in my age bracket, I am very athletic in a “younger way”.

Nowadays I use 500mg of NR every day. I take 250mg in the morning and 250mg in the evening. On the plant based supplement side I still rotate every 2-3 weeks honokiol, fisetin etc. I take max. 2 plant based supplements at the time. I am fairly sure some have somewhat synergetic effects but thats for another post. Similarly I have done some other experiments that I repeat now and then but also those will need to wait for another post.

In summary: my journey in anti-aging is paying off well, it has Niagen at the basis and additional plant based supplements to help beat out inflammation and other aging type health issues.

Hi – How are your parents doing? My mom is 88 and she has been taking it for a year now… it’s insane how much better her mind is and her face (she always looked young) but she looks even more amazing then before. She has diabetes since 84 but her blood sugar has gone down and her metformin has been reduced. I think she does not eat as well as she should as she lives with another family member, and she falls back on simple things and eats frozen dinners at times. Her blood sugar is much better when she visits with me as I cook for her. Would love to hear how your parents are doing? Hope they are doing as well as my mother. I’m taking it as well (age 48/female/no other pills) and it has completely reduced my brain fog and memory. In my 30’s, at work, I could remember everything. When I hit 44 I seem to have no energy and no memory for things I would read – it was so annoying. After just, 3 to 5 months amazingly I was back to my normal 30’s self. It’s awesome. I can’t believe others do not try it. I know it doesn’t always work for everyone. I was a complete skeptic too – I was at my wits end and thought what the hell, it can’t hurt. It is awesome!

Some of us suspect that you can get the same benefits of nicotinamide riboside (which cost about $1.00 per day for 500 mg) by taking nicotinamide (a simpler molecule that doesn’t contain the riboside). Nicotinimide costs about 30 cents a day for 500 mg. Nicotinimide has also been found to boost NAD+ and studies show that it reverses skin cancers and pre-skin cancer conditions. The following study suggests that in laboratory animals that were given nicotinamide riboside that the nicotinamide and the riboside became separated in the gut and that only the nicotinamide was absorbed into the blood stream: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6218262

Nicotinamide is a cheap vitamin that has been around for years. There is no money in studying it and promoting it. On the other had Chromadex (the parent company of True Niagen) owns a patent on nicotinamide riboside so it may be hoping to make big bucks on something that you can buy for a lot less.

Quercitin inhibits CD38, which is a NAD+ase — might wish to consider taking it regularly along with NAD+ precursors, as a complementary method for increasing NAD+.
