I am doing good, in particular I continue notice the high energy levels in my body. I have gotten used to this somewhat but often when I am active outside I marvel at the this e.g. winter has started here but it doesn’t borther me a bit, no cold hands, no cold feet, rain or snow I keep going. My youthful look keep improving as well, in particular because of the hair recovery that I wrote about today. Wrinkles are less deep but in essence still there and I don’t believe they will disappear with my current regime which has raised my interest in other areas e.g. glycation end products. Eyes may have improved slightly and I am hopefull that continuous somewhat, future will tell.

In the last 2 months I have also done couple of experiments. First off I added an afternoon dose of NR in addition to the morning and evening dose. I have an impression that has positive impact on energy levels and when I look at the end of the day in the mirror I look fresher. This is somewhat contrary to reports that this would not make sense. Secondly I dropped Pterostilbene and Fisetin to see do I notice a difference. Its a month now and there are very early impressions. I start to notice the typical older male symptom of needed to urinate more often, this had gone away largely once I started the supplementation but on the other side as said I feel more energetic overall. I believe the cause is the extra NR dose but I will be able to confirm that once I restart the Pterostilbene and Fisetin. Reason for temporarely dropping is that I would like to test some anti-glycation nutraceuticals and I dont want to take massive different supplements at the same time (otherwise I don’t know anymore what does what, what gives synergism, what doesn’t). But in the light of the above I will restart Pterostilbene and Fisetin and try to spread more during day.

The last weeks have been extremely busy at work and therefore less time to spend on aging studies. As result I have left my supplementation scheme unchanged since the August 20th update below. You may be interested however in a facial structure picture comparison that I posted here.

15 months and counting on NR and Pterostilbene,  Magonolia extract for 7 months, 3 months of Fisetin and 1.5 month of Quercetin. I feel excellent. I have added a multivitamin just out of precaution. And also taken some magnesium and zink to ensure nothing is depleted there either. The zink addition btw somewhat increased libido as also reported by others. I am not using this daily, about once every 3 days as a precaution.

This is hard to judge (and could be placebo) but if I would need to make a judgement I would say the additions are increasing the anti-aging effect. Some of main areas I track:

  • hairline recovery continuous and some thickening
  • face structure (ECM) recovery continuous
  • more muscled than in past
  • good exercise performance overall and more “immediate” energy available
  • eye focus ability continuous to fluctuate

Given the positive impression I am going to continue with this combination of supplements another month. Also I read several studies about the chances that my gut flora would produce Urolithin A, probably its over 50% (in future more on that) so for a week I drank 1 liter of pomegranate juice a day. But its not the easiest to drink, high calorie and relatively expensive. So I gave up on that and I am planning to buy ellagitannin supplements instead. Did not notice any effects from the 1 week drinking.

For those interested, my first 10 days of NR usage observations are at the below part of this page. Currently I am using the following supplements:

  • Nicotinamide Riboside (Niagen) for the benefits it gives wrt cell metabolism and increasing the NAD+ pool which “fuels” several processes beneficial for anti-aging
  • Pterostilbene for its ability to stimulate sirtuins and its anti cancer properties
  • Magnolia Extract (90% Honokiol) for its ability to stimulate sirtuins, its anti-inflammation and its anti cancer properties
  • Omega 3 for its alleged positive impact on eye health (may drop this)
  • Fisetin (since 1st of May 2016) for its potential to protect against cognitive and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and possible impact on skin health.
  • Quercetin for its various roles e.g. anti-inflammatory and its ability to manipulate NAD+ levels via CD38 
  • Occasional multi vitamin, magnesium, zink to ensure prevention of depletions

Update 7th of July 2016, next update start of August

So its now 14 months on NR and Pterostilbene,  Magonolia extract for 6 months, 2 months of Fisetin and since a week Quercetin. Overall I feel good and look fresh. I have not changed the doses since last month.

Last month I wrote that I noted a small uptick in memory since starting Fisetin, that sense is still there but it has not caused any miracle memory changes. Then again expecting that would be unrealistic. I had some doubt on whether I should use Fisetin continuously due to its topoisomerase inhibition which is on one side positive as it adds an anti-cancer effect but has also been flagged as bringing a risk, for now I am less concerned about it and will continue with daily use but likely cycle in the very long run.

During the 14 months of use I have also become more perceptive to small changes in skin, hair and face structure for the simple reason that I have started to check more carefully. That has led me to conclude that I continue to have an anti-aging effect progressing at a low pace. Eyesight however is an area were I don’t sense further improvement after some initial recovery. I also noticed that on some days I visibly can see the anti aging effect is strong. It typically comes from a combination of exercise, irregular eating and the supplementation over a few days period. I haven’t been able to pin it down, probably should create a plan to test combinations. The other way around I have unfortunately noticed also. Ideally there would be more scientific ways to daily monitor anti-aging health markers but so far I have not found these so some of this is subjective.

Last week I started to use Quercetin which I had on my watch list for some time. The trigger to start were the reports around CD38. While it is not clear (at least to me) whether CD38 is a run away enzyme that needs to be blunted or that it raises due to a genuine higher consumption need more downstream or both it did convince me that supplementation Quercetin might have a noticeable impact. At the same time Quercetin inhibits somewhat SIRT6 which in the long term would not be good or at least this link warrants more study. So as a limited experiment lets see what a 1 month of usage brings.

Update 5th of June 2016, next update start of July I have been using NR and Pterostilbene now for 13 months, Magonolia extract for 5 months and feel good and look fresh. I have increased the doses from the recommended values to see whether that makes a difference. Ofcourse this is for each person different and a persons height/weight has influence as well. But I noticed somewhat better results at a slightly higher level than recommended. I would suggest to just experiment a bit. Having said that I noticed effects at the recommended doses also. Since the start of May I added Fisetin at 2 caps a day. It may be placebo but I think my memory has had a slight uptick. Let see if that feeling stays with another month of usage.

In general the better is now normal. Probably I should write a post about the  improvements but as each person is different it may mislead others expectations. What is commonly reported is the higher energy level especially over time. Currently I am considering whether cycling of supplements makes sense as opposed to continuous use in order to avoid the body to “get used” to them. But this study somewhat counters that thought. I will consider the cycling for future, in particular if I would add more supplements as it is not clear if they would work synergistic-ally or then against eachother.

I thought it would be interesting to post my first 10 days of notes of taking NR and Pterostilbene as a reference for those starting on it too. Here they are in there raw, non edited version:

Day 1 –April 17th, 2015

Ok here we go, day 1 of use of P and NR. I took the pictures and will try to start noting whether I see improvements:

Day 2 –April 18

I may be fantasying and this is just mental or then I simply slept well (which I did) and I am better rested but feeling a bit different. A more steady heat in body. Hands feel well how to say more alive. And certainly my eyes work better, still not great. Motoric responses seem better. Again maybe just mental.

Seems better but lets see now it continues. Typically during day I would have trouble focussing on mid range. Lets see what happens today

Day 3 –April 19

I still think my eyes are better. Longer distance focus seems better, mid distance some 10-15 meter range still focus issues and bluriness. Also indoor still some focus challenges at mid range. Longer distance and short seems better. Hands still now and then a bit painfull like before. Body feels motoricly more smooth. Again maybe just mental/placebo. Today a new observation face skin seems tighter and a tad smoother. Or at least it feels a little different.

Overall better, still challenges with mid range. I have set a few reference points where there is focus problems. Lets see do they get sharper as time passes

Day 4 –April 20

It is a bright day. My eyes outside have clearly less focus problems. But given the fact there is a lot of light today this may not be real. Indoor I can still see some focus issues. Tonight when I go to gym, at artificial light, I  probably more realistic feedback as I know the areas from where things look blurry. Okay was in the gym and the eyes seem better, focus in the artificial light has improved. Gym in itself also went well.

I did not look the freshest today bit still some sense of smoothness of skin

Better ability to focus in both outside and inside. The mid range was better also. Its not perfect but definitely better. Also it felt the night was not as dark as normal. Bright lights are better shaped, they look less like a blur.

I didn’t write on this before but it felt slightly better

Handpain stayed the same. I could not recall carrying lots of stuff so no improvement today

– gym performance

I went to body pump class. It may have been mental but I completed couple exercises with weight levels I have not used before. But also in earlier classes I had to really push into the pain limit to complete some exercises as compared to today. So interesting.

Day 5 –April 20

One way or another there is positive impact and it would appear too much coincidence that it is because I sleep better or something

I went to sauna yesterday so skin usually looks “cleaner” so no opinion. Hair felt very smooth today after shower. Skin felt tighter as well. Lets see tomorrow

Vision stayed better today. Even slightly better than yesterday. This has not happened for long time

Handpain slightly better but that has also fluctuated before.

– gym performance

Only short trip to gym. I didn’t notice too much from yesterdays intense work out. So recovered well, better than would have expected.

Day 10 –April 25

Ok I skip 5 days with writing to make sure its not all placebo effect. Vision alternated between good – bad a bit yesterday but came more to good after doing some more intense activity. Also I am increasing a bit my food intake. Probably I should also ensure that I get enough variety of food. I am theorizing that something may get depleted so I need to adjust eating and better nutrients.

Vision fluctuated. But overall still better. Eyes started working better during day
